YMCA Supportive Housing Campus2 SW 9th St.
Des Moines, IA 50309
The YMCA Supportive Housing Campus is a community solution to help eliminate homelessness by providing hope, dignity, and support in the form of permanent supportive housing.
This Housing First Model helps people who are homeless (or at-risk of homelessness) move into stable and secure permanent housing supplemented by supportive services. Case management, transportation assistance, food/clothing/hygiene pantries, rental assistance and other services help people meet their basic needs and reach their life goals.
The campus provides a place to call home for 140 men and women. The constant wait list demonstrates the need for affordable housing in the community.
The Y began to provide housing in Des Moines in 1960 as an extended-stay hotel for men. As standards changed, the Y became a weekly rental motel and then an emergency shelter. In the 1990s, funding was granted to create a transitional housing program for homeless adult men. Finally, after much planning, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines opened the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus on June 27, 2011.
