Swim Lessons & Youth Aquatics

Swimming

For over 110 years, the Y has been an innovator and leader in aquatics program development worldwide. We were the first organization to offer organized swim lessons and began Group Lessons in 1907 at the Detroit YMCA by George Corsan.

At the YMCA, children and adults learn to swim in a positive, fun manner that builds athletic, social and interpersonal skills. They learn about themselves, safety and rescue skills, and water activities thatcan be enjoyed for a lifetime.

If you have question about what level your child should be participating in please view our Swim Lesson Guidelines.

On-line class registration for swim lessons at all YMCA branches.

The YMCA of Greater Des Moines and the John R. Grubb Community YMCA have received a $2500 grant from The USA Swimming Foundation. That organization's Make a Splash initiative is a national child-focused water safety campaign, which aims to provide the opportunity for every child in America to learn to swim.Through Make a Splash, the USA Swimming Foundation partners with learn-to-swim providers and water safety advocates across the country to provide swimming lessons and educate children and their families on the importance of learning how to swim. The USA Swimming Foundation has invested millions of dollars to provide grants to qualified Local Partner learn-to-swim programs, to spread national awareness, and to bring together strategic partners to end drowning.  To date, more than 2 million children have received the lifesaving gift of swim lessons through the USA Swimming Foundation Make a Splash Local Partner network, comprised of more than 600 qualified lesson providers across the nation.
