The Y strives to promote healthy living, youth development and social responsibility. Here's a story from the Head Swim Coach Laura Barnett at the Boone County YMCA that embodies all of the above. The anecdote is from this weekend's swim meet. Great job, swimmers! And thank you for sharing, Laura.
As a past swim instructor at the Ankeny Y, I frequently had to help out swimmers who were tired or small and just couldn't make it out of the pool on their own. After swimming the 100 breast, a swimmer from an out-of-town team was having difficulty getting out of the water in lane 7. Her teammate, who stood behind the lane 7 block, stood back and watched as two Boone swimmers from other lanes quickly moved to help her out of the pool, showing a great amount of sportsmanship and respect toward someone they've never met. The two Boone swimmers broke their concentration and preparation for their own races to help the welfare of another.
It takes a village to raise a child, but it takes an amazing small town to create wonderful young adults.
I couldn't be prouder.
