Riverfront Renovations
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines is moving ahead with plans to renovate the Riverfront Y.
A review committee has recently interviewed architects and plans to announce the selected firm soon. That firm will assess the needs of the current Riverfront Y before proposing renovation plans that will meet today’s members’ needs as well as establishing a better connection with the adjacent Riverwalk project.
The Riverfront renovations will be financed through tax credits and fundraising. There is no time estimate on when construction will begin.
“I don’t anticipate closing this branch during the renovation process,” said Vernon Delpesce, chief executive officer of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. “Our Riverfront members should know that they will continue to have access to the facilities throughout construction.”
Renovation to the Riverfront Y is limited to the membership portion of the branch. The old residential towers complex is not tied to the project and conversations continue with developers and others on the future use of that facility.
