YMCA Adventure Guides is designed for fathers and their children in grades k-4. YMCA Adventure Guides focuses on the father's role as a guide in a child's life. Fathers lead, direct, supervise, influence and teach while presenting opportunities for their children to explore the world around them. They lead by example as they set their children on a path through life. The program experience begins as a side-by-side journey for a parent and child, until the child is launched into more advanced, independent activities.
This program is a great opportunity for you to spend time with your children, participate in fun activities, and meet other Dad’s and kids in the program.
We have eight great expedition adventures planned from October through May for you to participate with your children, friends, and circle groups.
The very first and most important event is the Harvest Moon Campout at the YMCA Camp in Boone, Iowa. At this event, you will have a chance to participate in some great outdoor activities that the Boone Y Camp has to offer. This is also your chance to meet, organize, and plan your circle group activities for the year. Be sure to sign up for this event at your local YMCA on or before October 1st.
You as the “Guide” and your child as the “Explorer” will have the opportunity to join a group of other Guides and Explorers to form a Circle Group. As a member of a Circle Group, you will choose individual program names, a Circle name, and meet in a family home once a month.
Expedition adventures are events that include all Circle Groups from the Des Moines Area. More information for each adventure will be available before the event.
Your coordinator at the Walnut Creek YMCA is Amy Johnson and at the Waukee Family YMCA is Katie Lochner. We are here to help you learn about the program, keep you informed on the expedition adventures, and facilitate an opportunity for you to mentor the growth and development of your child.
You can contact us by email at
amy.johnson@dmymca.org also by leaving a message by calling the Walnut Creek or Waukee YMCAs at 224-1888.
You can sign up for the program at your local YMCA. There is no charge to become a member of the Adventure Guide Expedition and our program is open to both members and non-members of the YMCA.
Friends Forever! That’s our program motto. Sign up for the program today!
