The YMCA Supportive Housing Program (SHP) is a 188 bed facility which addresses the needs of homeless men in our community. Each room is single occupancy and equipped with a bed, dresser, desk, and chair. The YMCA provides all linens and towels for program participants. The Riverfront YMCA SHP is the largest provider of shelter for homeless men in the state of Iowa in addition to being one of a few homeless providers that are single room occupancy. All residents receive around the clock answering service, front desk assistance, emergency provisions, access to health care, membership to the YMCA and benefit from a secure entry system.
The Supportive Housing Program is designed to serve homeless men who want to transition from homelessness to independent living. The SHP has a two year time limit for participants. Men receive affordable housing and case management services. On site, a limited amount of food supplies, personal hygiene items, transportation subsidies, and other related resources are provided. For some men, additional resources are needed and case managers collaborate with other agencies to provide wrap around services. Case managers develop case plans with all participants to develop a plan for self sufficiency within two years. The SHP is funded through HUD monies, other grant monies and supported in part by the participants' rent. On average, more than 120 men are engaged in case management and receive supportive services at any given time during the year.
The YMCA has broken ground on a new facility for this program. Construction is schedule to be completed by the Fall of 2011.
