Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving – a day to unite individuals and organizations worldwide for the common purpose of giving back and helping those in need.
Following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year’s Giving Tuesday will take place on November 27th and will kick off the giving season. Every act of generosity counts, and each means even more when we give together.
Where does the Y come in?
No matter who you are or what neighborhood you grow up in, the Y is a place for anyone who needs us. We provide people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities the opportunities they need to reach their full potential.
Every day in Des Moines, the Y supports kids, adults, seniors and families with programs that protect, teach, connect, heal, nourish and encourage. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together.
The YMCA Supportive Housing Campus fills a unique role in our community, offering permanent housing for 140 residents who were formerly homeless or at risk of homelessness. Based on the Housing First model, Y-SHC provides a stable and secure home with wraparound onsite supportive services. From there, we’re able to help people meet basic needs and reach life goals.
Supportive services include case management, rental subsidy, food/clothing/hygiene pantries, transportation assistance, care packages, resident activities, and so much more! Y-SHC is the only housing program of this kind in the United States.
At the Y, children and teens learn positive values and positive behaviors, and can explore their own unique talents and interests. That makes for confident kids today, and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.
Throughout our eight branches and Y-Camp, we support kids and provide them a safe place where they can discover who they are and what they can achieve. This growth happens all throughout the year within our many different youth development programs: summer learning, youth sports, day camp, resident camp, before-and-after-school programming, swim lessons and water safety programs.
For 150 years, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines has been serving central Iowa by providing programs that promote youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. With eight membership branch locations, a 140-unit supportive housing campus and a 400 acre Y-Camp, the Y is dedicated to the cause of strengthening the foundations of community.
Annually, the Y of Greater Des Moines serves more than 100,000 individuals through membership and programs. Thanks to the support of generous donors, the Y has been able to assist more than 18,000 individuals through our scholarship program. This financial assistance provides access to outcome-based programs supporting community needs such as improving graduation rates, fighting chronic disease, ending homelessness, building stronger families and so much more.
Thank you for considering a gift to support the important ongoing work of the YMCA. With your gift, you become a part of a powerful association of men, women and children joined together to support others grow in spirit, mind and body.
