You’re busy, tired, overwhelmed, not feeling motivated — no wonder you’re having trouble sticking to your wellness goals. Don’t worry — you can do this! Here are four tips to help you stay on track.
1. Schedule your workouts
Just as you put dentist appointments and work meetings on your calendar, schedule your workouts and treat them like any other appointment you can’t miss or reschedule. “Hey, let’s hit up that 4 p.m. two-for-one appetizer deal,” your co-worker tempts. “Sorry,” you reply, “I’ve got a yoga appointment.”
2. Start small
Work with what you’ve got; if that means you have just 20 minutes over lunch, use those 20 minutes and feel good about the time spent being active instead of regretting the fact that you skipped the gym altogether. Is the idea of revamping your whole diet overwhelming? Start by swapping out some snacks (almonds instead of chips, a banana instead of cookies). The minutes of activity and handfuls of food add up, so don’t think of wellness as an all-or-nothing game.
3. Find a workout buddy
It’s easier to bail on yourself than on a friend, so after a long day when you’re tempted to skip BodyPump at 5:30 p.m., knowing that Amy and Craig will be expecting you to be there (and will text you later saying, “Where were you tonight?”) can help you stick to your commitments.
4. Pack a bag
Phone, wallet, keys, workout gear — make this your new morning checklist. Maybe the day will take a turn and you won’t have time to get a run in, but always having your shoes and clothes on hand will make getting sessions in easier. Try leaving a set of clothes in your car or office too, so that “Oh, but I don’t have my stuff” can never be an excuse.
