"Fitness has always been a big part of my life,” Shane Spencer says. "A healthy body and healthy mind can achieve anything it sets out to get."
Shane is a star member of the Ankeny YMCA. After only a year with the Ankeny branch, he is already well-known by other members and staff for his dedication to health and fitness. He comes to the Y on a daily basis and inspires others to push their limits and reach their goals.
The bodybuilder shared how his exercise routine varies depending on his ever-changing goals. He rotates between powerlifting, a bodybuilding powerlifting mix and a rebuilding routine focused on muscular endurance.
When asked about his experience with fitness competitions, Shane explained that he got started with powerlifting after a fellow gym-goer in college encouraged him to give it a shot. His school put on a meet, and he jumped at the chance to participate. "I've been hooked ever since," he says. Shane has competed in two full power meets and two bench-only meets, placing first in all of them.
He credits the Y for his commitment to physical fitness. "I have befriended almost all the staff members, and without them encouraging me, I wouldn't be where I am now." Shane comes into the facility with a goal in mind and is proud to say he won't stop until he gets what he set out to do that day or week. He is always pushing to hit new numbers, whether it be a weight personal record or a repetition count personal record.
