“We all have a choice, but the YMCA staff is special and you won’t find that everywhere.”
With the goal of starting to exercise before having gastric sleeve surgery, Norma Boge-Conyers turned to the Y two years ago. She wanted to lose weight, but more importantly, she wanted to gain strength and get healthy.
Norma set horseback riding and white water rafting as two other milestones she wanted to reach — and reach them she did; see some action shots below! Norma is the type of person who’s not afraid to try anything at least once, and she humbly describes herself as a work in progress.
Norma comes to the Wellmark YMCA every Tuesday and Thursday to train with Rachel Kelderman. “Rachel encourages me to do more than I think I can,” Norma says — she gives her the “You got this!” mindset. Norma knows she can always count on getting a good workout with Rachel, and the relationship they have developed has come to mean a lot to her. “We all have a choice,” Norma reflects, “but the YMCA staff is special and you won’t find that everywhere.”
She describes the Y as inclusive — it’s all about the abilities and not the disabilities. Did we mention Norma’s accomplished all of these wellness feats with a visual impairment?
Thanks for being an inspiration to the Y community, Norma!
