The Healthy Kids program at the YMCA of Greater Des Moines helps youth and families develop skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors and better health — helping families learn, grow, and thrive together. The program is currently held at the John R. Grubb Community YMCA, Ankeny Family YMCA and YMCA Healthy Living Center. Read on to hear how things are going at the Grubb Y!
The Healthy Kids program, sponsored by a grant from John Deere, has seen tremendous growth in the last four months at the John R. Grubb Community YMCA. In the fall of 2015, the program had only one family regularly participating. Since re-launching in January 2016, there are six families participating, with over 20 kids and their parents showing nearly 100% participation.
The program meets Monday evenings and includes physical activity and nutrition education for both children and their guardians. Recently, a second day of activity was added on Wednesday nights per the families’ requests. With the help of a Spanish interpreter, program participation has grown to include families with otherwise limited opportunities for involvement. We are proud to offer a program that promotes healthy living, community engagement and fun for families!
