We love hearing how our members are reaching their goals and doing things they never thought possible — like losing 100 pounds! Emily Beckett of Broadlawns Medical Center tells us how one Y member’s in it for the long haul.
A patient of ours at Broadlawns since 2008, Jill* has been actively seeing our lifestyle management team since April 2010. At the start of her healthy lifestyle journey, she weighed in at 383 pounds. I am happy to say that almost exactly six years later, she has reached 275 pounds — a 108-pound weight loss which exceeds her long-term goal!
This equates to a 1.5-pound per month weight loss — some months were easier than others, but she always keeps her eye on her goals. I can easily say that she has been one of the most compliant patients, actively engaged in nutrition and exercise changes, goal setting and monitoring.
She has always had an exercise routine, but not until she joined the YMCA, utilizing water aerobics and toning machines to meet her goals, did she reach this monumental achievement. One thing Jill recently said to me was that it finally clicked — this is not some diet or exercise routine to follow, it is now her lifestyle.
I fully believe her perseverance and dedication to her health helped her achieve her goals. Next up: lose another 100 pounds. We know it won’t be the easiest undertaking, but she is in it for the long haul and I have no doubt she will accomplish this, especially with the help of the YMCA.
