Meet Mat, one of our team members who helps run Saturday Night Live (SNL), a program for any teenager in the Greater Des Moines area looking for a welcoming, safe place to play basketball. SNL at the Walnut Creek Y, which is free and open to non-members, runs every Saturday from 8 to 11 p.m.
How long have you worked for the YMCA of Greater Des Moines? 7 years
Why did you start working at the YMCA? Phil Simmons, a good friend of mine (who was in charge of SNL at the time) introduced me to the program, and I fell in love with it instantly and with the YMCA and what they stand for.
What do you like the most about the Y and your job here? I enjoy being involved with the youth while playing basketball at the same time. I have a passion for both working with teens and playing basketball so it's a perfect fit for me!
Best YMCA memory? There isn't one that sticks out, but I truly enjoy when I have all the kids (from the different Des Moines schools) and watching them play together and build friendships with each other even though they attend different schools. I enjoy going to their basketball games during the season and supporting them. I also love to see when the kids get to continue their education and are able to play basketball at a collegiate level.
