We’re almost three weeks into 2017 — how are you doing so far with your goals for the New Year? Smooth sailing? Awesome! (P.S. What’s your secret?). Fallen off the resolution wagon already? Here’s how to get back on track.
Don’t have a funeral yet.
So you missed a whole week of working out for whatever reason, and now you’re taking that as a sign that you should call it quits? Don’t let your resolutions die just because you aren’t sticking to the plan perfectly — the fact that you’re aware of your progress (or lack thereof) means your resolutions are still very much alive (or at least on life support).
Make it visual.
It’s floating around in your head now, that goal you’re working toward — easily shoved to the back of the mind’s junk drawer by other thoughts and worries. Try making your resolution visible and thus more official. Make a note in your phone or calendar, scribble on a Post-it, tack something to your cubicle wall — whatever you need to do to help you keep that goal top of mind. There’s probably an app for what you’re working on.
Was your goal someone else’s goal? “Many people don’t make their own resolutions out of what’s most meaningful and desirable for them but they set it out of what other people told them they need to do out of fear or guilt,” Dr. Karen Lawson of the University of Minnesota adds. “So the motivation doesn’t come from within but comes from the outside and that doesn’t tend to lead to success.”
Do one productive thing by the end of the day.
You don’t need to drop and do twenty push-ups right now, but you could throw your gym clothes in a bag and put them by the door, right? You could toss some baby carrots in a baggie to bring to work tomorrow. You could put your phone face-down on silent mode and focus on who or what’s in front of you. Little things turn into big things — and it all counts.
Tell us how your 2017 goals are doing so far. What’s working? What’s not?
