My name is Carol Smith. My husband and I have been members at the YMCA Healthy Living Center since January 2014. I started volunteering in the laundry room in June of 2014 and was hired part-time in October 2014.
I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis with lupus overlap in 2009 after noticing my fingers were extremely swollen and stiff. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease which affects every joint, organ and muscle in your body.
As if rheumatoid arthritis with lupus overlap wasn’t enough, they invited their friend hemolytic anemia to the party in 2015. Hemolytic anemia tried to kill me in September 2015, but luckily this was avoided by receiving a blood transfusion.
I believe the Y-HLC has been a big part of my remaining healthy by providing me with a safe place to work out. I now take six tai chi classes, ride the bike, take an occasional spin class and Balance in Motion water exercise class, and walk laps.
