“As a mom, I was excited to see the end performance. I had a boy and girl in the class. Both children were excited to go every week. They were sad when it ended. We are looking forward to the next session.” -Stephanie Peters
On the very first day of dance/cheer class I was probably just as anxious as my students. I didn't know what to expect from the group and hadn't cheered since my freshman year at Drake. When everyone arrived, their lively spirit reassured me that this was going to be a great session!
Over the weeks we learned about the Y's four core values (caring, honesty, respect, responsibility) and started each practice off by sharing how students have demonstrated one of the values in their day.
My older group was given the opportunity to show they were responsible by deciding to take their poms home or leave them at the Grubb Y. Surprisingly, one of my students said to me that she knew she would forget them at home and that she would like to keep them at the Y. I definitely feel like the core values helped us see how participating in the Y dance/cheer program can relate to their daily lives.
The students learned very fast and rocked our final performance for the parents! When they were all sharing the best thing about our five weeks together, more than half of the group shared that being with me was the best part of their experience. I'm so grateful that the Y has once again given me the opportunity to positively impact the lives of youth! I'm excited for the next session and I'm ready to continue building with my students and the Y.
