YMCAs across the country are getting on board with the maker movement. Inspired by concepts from both STEM and creative arts, the maker movement encourages youth to be creative and innovative with their approach to solving problems and exploring new ideas.
What is a makerspace? Makerspace is an open community where creativity and innovation are enhanced through collaboration. Using a variety of tools and materials, youth can create, explore, invent and discover. No two makerspaces are alike.
The mindset behind a makerspace is as important as the physical contents. To have a true makerspace, you must create an environment of community partnership, collaboration and creation. Here at the Y, strengthening community is our cause, and it’s easy to see how the maker movement aligns with that goal.
This fall, the Walnut Creek Family YMCA will debut Makerspace Saturdays, featuring our mobile makerspace in the social center. The makerspace is free for members, and all ages are welcome to spend time creating and inventing. See upcoming dates and details for Makerspace Saturdays at the Walnut Creek Family YMCA.
