A rising senior and tennis player at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Julianna Curtis chose to spend her summer learning about nonprofit management at the Grubb YMCA. A Des Moines native, Julianna was excited to return home to share her passion for tennis with inner-city students.
As an Enrichment Counselor in Power Scholars Academy, our new summer program at Findley Elementary School, she piloted the USTA (United States Tennis Association) youth program. Julianna taught lessons two days a week for students in third through fifth grade at the Drake University Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
In addition to her program duties, Julianna was able to job shadow key YMCA staff including those in marketing, fundraising and membership development. She used what she learned from those encounters to plan her service project, 1 Family Festival. Julianna collaborated with several local churches to host this family friendly event at the Grubb YMCA which was attended by over 200 people.
After a long and grinding summer at the YMCA, Julianna has returned to FGCU with a new sense of purpose and possibly a future career as a servant leader, although she’s already that to many on and off the court.
