You might have slipped up a bit already, but don’t let the first two semi-successful weeks of 2018 mess with your health goals. Here are four ways to shake it off and keep cruising.
Give yourself a break
Jogging feels like torture. Those downward dogs are dogging you. The weight machines are an intimidating jungle. Before you start getting down on yourself, recognize that you’re just a person who’s trying to do something new. “We talk in much harsher tones to ourselves than we would to other people,” Dr. Pauline Wallin reflects. “We wouldn’t say to a kid trying to learn something ‘that’s so stupid’ but that’s how we talk to ourselves.”
Adjust your goals
"People often get caught setting goals based on a ‘prize’ that is unfortunately controlled by factors that they cannot always influence,"fitness coach Dave Smith argues. For example, you might be working toward the “prize” of fitting into an old pair of jeans by April. This is an achievement that could be derailed by any number of factors, some outside of your control. “The solution to the goal-setting problem is to develop goals based on actions that are within your control,” Smith explains.
For example, you could identify small actionable “wins” along the way. Going to the gym for thirty minutes is a win. Walking instead of driving is a win. Making oatmeal instead of eating a pastry is a win. “Goals can inspire you to take on new challenges and can motivate you to keep pressing on even when quitting seems more appealing,” Smith explains. “Just be sure that your goals are within your control so that you dictate your own success.”
Commit to a challenge
Having a definitive event on the calendar to train for, especially if you’re working toward an accomplishment with a friend, can be the nudge you need to get moving. How about our Ice Breaker Triathlon on Jan. 28 or the YMCA Red Flannel Run on Feb. 10? After you conquer those, join us for the Pieathlon on May 19!
Have you met with a wellness coach or signed up for ActivTrax yet? These free services can help you establish a customized health plan and feel more comfortable utilizing all the Y’s offerings and equipment. Members who attend an ActivTrax appointment within their first two weeks of joining are six times more likely to achieve their goals.
Don’t get too rattled by all the hype around New Year’s resolutions — you can begin to change your life on any old Thursday and if today goes all wrong, try again tomorrow. We’ll be with you all the way.
