“I love it here. I love my apartment, and I have many friends. I will live here forever.”
Although Lazaro loved Cuba, he was anxious to move to the United States in 1980 at the age of 31. When he arrived in Chicago, he was overwhelmed by the noise of everyone speaking at once, even though he knew some English. Eager to explore, Lazaro set off from Chicago to Wisconsin and then found his forever home in Des Moines.
When he first came to Des Moines, Lazaro lived in a small house with nine people, so when he moved to the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus, he was ecstatic to have his own space. In addition to housing, Lazaro has found steady employment. A very hard worker, Lazaro has managed a busy parking lot downtown for many years.
At Y-SHC, he enjoys being with friends, drinking coffee in the mornings and spending time in the courtyard. “I love it here," Lazaro says. "I love my apartment, and I have many friends. I will live here forever.”
