Ninety-nine years ago, two men stepped off a train near Fraser, Iowa in search of a place for Y Camp to call home. Y Camp had been operating for several years, but didn’t own any land of its own. George Weber and Howard Crawford decided it was time to plant some Y Camp roots.
While waiting for the train back to Des Moines, Weber and Campbell heard someone mention that a local dance hall had closed and was for sale. The two hiked from Fraser to the dance hall, and as they stood overlooking the Des Moines River, they found the Des Moines Y Camp’s home.
Today, the 400-acre site overlooking the river is bustling with cabins, recreational activities and generations of Y Camp alumni. We’ve developed programs that build campers into leaders, adventurers and great friends. On Memorial Day weekend in 2019, Y Camp is celebrating 100 years of traditions, memories and alumni, and we want you to join us!
Partying like it’s 1919!
It’s literally going to be the party of the century. We have opened up (and already filled!) all our cabins for the weekend, but will be welcoming everyone and anyone who wants to attend, whether you come for one event or stay the entire weekend.
The festivities start Friday night with a reception for current and past board members. On Saturday, we’ll have individual events scheduled all day: a golf outing, disc golf, airplane rides over Y Camp, bike rides on the Trestle Trail, canoe trips down the river, and a few more surprises. You’ll be able to pick and choose events to do with your friends and family.
Sunday starting at 10 a.m., Y Camp’s main celebration event begins. We anticipate hosting 1,000 or more campers and visitors who will take part in camp tours, activity areas, food trucks and a free barbecue dinner. All your favorite activities — such as archery, arts and crafts, basketball, canoes, the climbing wall and horseback riding and more — will be available. We will wrap up the celebration with a campfire program held around an awesome bonfire, featuring Y Camp traditions loved by generations of campers. This will be a fantastic family day filled with excitement, adventures and camaraderie.
We want to celebrate you, your support and your enthusiasm for Y Camp that has kept us going for a century. We wouldn’t be Y Camp without you! Block off Memorial Day weekend 2019 to join us in this once-in-a-century celebration — we can’t wait to see you.
