Des Moines native, Dowling High School graduate, and sister to four brothers, Maureen came to the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus from Arizona. Her parents retired and moved to Arizona a handful of years ago and she lived there for a while working in home health care with inbound people and at a Children’s Christian Camp. A few years ago, Maureen decided to return to her home in Iowa because she missed the changing seasons and feels that people are nicer here.
She stayed at a shelter while looking for work, but found that rent wasn’t affordable with the income earned from the jobs she was applying for. While looking, she heard about the Y-SHC and found that she could afford the rent living here. She ended up loving the location because it’s so close to her job at Mia Pizza in the downtown Hy-Vee.
Maureen’s goal in life is to open a Bed and Breakfast with a coffeehouse and bookstore in it, but until then you can find Maureen working out at the Wellmark YMCA with her personal trainer, reading murder mystery books, listening to classical music or singing karaoke. She attends Calvary Chapel Church in East Village and her favorite Bible verse is from the book of Proverbs: “When a man’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.” When asked what three words her friends would use to describe her, she replied “speedy Gonzalez, friendly and hard working.”
