When the Koencks walk through the doors of the Indianola YMCA one thing is certain: it’s going to be a great day. Loyal has a smile and cheerful hello for everyone he meets… and, if you’re lucky enough, you just might get the chance to hear one of his stories about serving our country or living on their farm in southern Iowa prior to moving to Indianola 16 years ago.
Loyal and Susie joined the Y in July 2015 and at first, they wondered if they would fit in. “We weren’t very athletic,” Susie laughs. Fast forward three years and there’s no doubt the two are right where they belong. In fact, any of the daytime Y staff will tell you that Loyal and Susie are more than just members… they’re family.
Coming to the Y gives the Koencks a reason to get up and moving – even on those days when it seems easier to stay home. While Susie jumps in and enjoys exercising in the pool, Loyal heads up to the walking track.
It’s the variety of classes that are available, as well as the help and support they get from instructors and staff that keep them coming back. “We always feel better once we get here and it sets the pace for the day,” says Susie.
Coffee and Friends are the Perfect Blend
What the Koencks didn’t realize when they joined the Y is that their membership would give them so much more than just a place to work out. In fact, the social aspect has been an added bonus for them.
After getting his laps in, it’s not unusual to find Loyal headed up the stairs with a drink carrier full of hot cups of coffee. And whenever there’s an empty pot, Welcome Center staff can always count on him to get another one brewing. “I just love being here, helping out and talking with people,” he says.
So who’s drinking the coffee? It’s their friends in the “Coffee Club” who all happened to meet at the Y. While it may not always be the same group every day, they love getting together to joke around, laugh, tell stories and catch up. They even bring treats when there’s a birthday to celebrate.
“We’ve made so many friends and met so many people we might not have otherwise had it not been for this place,” the Koencks say. “There’s something here for everyone and we feel so grateful to be a part of the Indianola Y family.”
