December 5 is International Volunteer Day and it’s no secret that volunteering has many great benefits. Across the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, there are so many men and women who volunteer their time and effort so people of all ages from all walks of life have the resources and support they need to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.
There are many different things volunteers do each and every day, but on this International Volunteer Day, we want to recognize four ways volunteers make our Y great.
Coaches and teachers are the backbone of our youth sports programs throughout the association. These volunteers motivate and support youth in building the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices and the pursuit of higher education and goals. We cannot understate the impact these volunteers make in the lives of our children.
The YMCA Supportive Housing Campus is a host to volunteers nearly each and every day. These volunteers extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier through making and serving meals, decorating their community space and preparing special hand-ups for the 140 residents who called Y-SHC home.
Annual campaigners reach out to members in our communities and share their story. These volunteers give their time and energy to share who we're all about and how their lives have been affected by the YMCA. We couldn’t do this without their dedication and effort every year.
Our board members volunteer their time and expertise to all parts of our association. Their help and support give us the guidance and ability to continue our impact of strengthening the foundations of our communities. We are grateful for the time and energy they give to benefit the YMCA.
For each and every volunteer that has helped us in the past, present and future – thank you. Volunteering has its benefits for everyone, but we could not be celebrating 150 years if it wasn’t for the men, women and teens who dedicate their time and energy every day by taking an active role in strengthening their communities.
