The 2018-2019 Cavs youth basketball team has been a great example of what we stand for at the YMCA.
When Coach Mark Hamilton volunteered to coach before the season started, he didn’t have a roster of players to coach. He took his son, a friend and a group of other players assigned to him and turned them into a team that displayed the core values of the YMCA – caring, honesty, respect and responsibility – on and off the court. The team has built friendships and trust in one another, which has resulted in the team working better together and playing together to create opportunities for one another.
"There are some real competitors on the team, but when someone has fallen they are willing to stop and check on them or help them up to ensure the other boy is okay."
We asked Coach Mark what core value best described the team and he said, “I would say caring is the core value that I have seen the most out of the boys. There are some real competitors on the team, but when someone has fallen they are willing to stop and check on them or help them up to ensure the other boy is okay. I have really stressed to the boys that we are out to have fun and compete the right way.”
Coach Mark said the most rewarding part of coaching the Cavs is watching the boys achieve goals they have set for themselves. “In working together and competing I have seen some very exciting and motivating moments as a result of the boys working together as a team,” he said.
The team has been fun to watch from afar because they not only play basketball well, but they also seem to enjoy playing the game and being part of a team. Mark has taken a group of players that had no connections and turned them into a group of friends that has a common interest in basketball.
Seeing them work toward a common goal through teamwork and demonstrate the core values of the YMCA has been very rewarding and a great example for other teams. The most obvious sign that the team had fun was that most of the players are returning for our second season of basketball that begins in early February.
