The Waukee Community Closet is a local non-profit providing pre-worn, high quality clothing at no charge to students in need in Dallas County. They are making a huge impact on the community by taking care of children’s basic necessities. It is shown that students are able to focus on school work and their educational needs without feeling self-conscious about their lack of clean or well-fitting clothes.

The Waukee Community Closet is staffed by an army of volunteers but is unable to be open all hours for donations, therefore the Waukee Family YMCA is collaborating with the Waukee Community Closet and has a donation bin in our lobby so people in the community will have access to a drop off location during YMCA operating hours. All clean high quality shoes, clothes and socks are accepted. All socks and underwear must be brand new.
The Waukee Leadership Institute 2019 class project is raise money to purchase the Waukee Community Closet a van to transport clothing to and from storage areas and also as an outreach vehicle to reach more of Dallas County. If you are interested in making a contribution please visit The Waukee Leadership Institute 2019 class project Facebook page.
Why did Waukee start partnering with them? We typically partner with them for a couple of drives every year and also donate our good lost and found to them. The reason this specific project came about is because this year is I am a participant of the Waukee Leadership Institute and it was identified in our class project as a need. We're working to get the Community Closet a mobile truck so they can be more than a store front location.
How did the Y get connected with them? There are many like-minded individuals associated with both the Y and the Community Closet. Both businesses have similar missions and value Social Responsibility greatly.
What has the Y seen in impact? More community members are getting involved. Our donation bin is always very full whenever we have a donation drive with them.
What has impacted Y staff from this partnership? Speaking for myself, I have volunteered at the closet and it was very impactful to see the simple joy this brings to children to be able to shop for clothes (the whole family can shop) and you can see the relief this provides them.
How have you seen the Y community respond? By donating and raising awareness for this great business. We love partnering with them because we share similar values of helping others.
