As an Ankeny native, Jessica has spent her life in and around Des Moines. She has a heart of gold and no matter what happens, she always wakes up with a smile on her face. Her generosity, kindness, and desire to say “yes” to people who needed help was taken advantage of when she was living alone, which made her realized that she needed a safe place like the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus (Y-SHC). She has lived at the Y-SHC for the past 1.5 years and has liked it so much because it’s a secured building, staffed 24/7 and no visitors are allowed in her apartment. This has helped her find solid footing and enjoy time on her own without people trying to take advantage of her.
Jessica enjoys the Y-SHC for many reasons other than the security she feels. She enjoys all the activities provided and the access that the Y provides to food and clothing. Jessica often invites her boyfriend of three years, Jacob, to community dinners each week. They enjoy sharing a meal together and when they’re not with the Y-SHC community, they’re often playing PlayStation and having some friendly competition with each other. While talking about how long they’ve lasted, Jessica credits their short breaks away from each other when tensions rise. This has helped them refocus and enjoy time together in the community center while looking forward to the future.
A year from now, Jessica would like to be living in her own apartment with Jacob and attending DMACC to study Business. Even though she’s living by herself at the Y-SHC, family remains very important to Jessica. She lives by the motto “Be true to who you are, and the family name you bear.” She may not bear the names of her “framily” at the Y-SHC, but she’ll tell you about how it’s been such a great place to start over and how she’ll leave with a new framily all her own.
