Summer is the time for kids to get up, get out and grow! But for some kids, exposure to activities that stimulate the body and mind ends with the school year. Each spring, more than 1,500 YMCAs across the country celebrate Healthy Kids Day to teach kids healthy habits and encourage active play.
Kids are less physically active and engaged in the learning process during the summer months, and research shows children gain weight two or three times faster during summer vacation than during the school year.
That alone could be enough for some changes in healthy habits, but kids – particularly from low-income families – also fall behind academically because they don’t have access to out-of-school learning opportunities. When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles that prevent them from reaching their full potential.
As a leading non-profit committed to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, the Y is addressing critical gaps in kids’ health and education.
For more than 25 years, Healthy Kids Day has been the Y’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids and families and is designed to provide kids more opportunities to stay active and grow in spirit, mind, and body. This is a free event for the public filled with the potential for growth, achievement, fitness, and FUN!
Healthy Kids Day is intended to get more kids moving, learning and creating habits they can continue all summer long. The Y is so much more than sports, swimming, gymnastics and a place for kids to hang out. We support families in their efforts to teach healthy habits and keep kids active and learning, preparing them for a brighter future. Healthy Kids Day is part of the Y’s promise to strengthen communities — join us to awaken your summer imagination and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity!
