STRIDE is a fun fitness and running program for boys in grades 3rd - 5th. Boys have the chance to share their thoughts and opinions about various life topics in a safe, encouraging environment that helps them develop character while building their running endurance to compete in a 5K.
Success + Teamwork + Respect + Inspiration + Determination = Excellence in Character
Ryan Westerkamp, Youth Sports & Community Director, asked STRIDE coach Jason Lawry (pictured above at the 2019 STRIDE 5K) about his experience with this program:
How many boys are in STRIDE currently at Maple Grove Elementary? I have 27 boys in my group this season (Other schools have almost 15).
How long have you been coaching? I've been teaching for 2 years and this is my 4th session of STRIDE.
What interested you in coaching STRIDE? I loved that the coaches were able to connect with the boys outside of the classroom (I'm a teacher at Maple Grove) and focus on the skills they'll need to become contributing members of our society.
Why do you like the program? I like it because we can push them to improve physically, socially, academically and emotionally.
What's one aspect you like about the STRIDE? Teamwork is a very important aspect of STRIDE, the kids learn how to work together, even though running is mostly seen as an individual sport.
