There’s no age limit on fitness – in fact our Active Older Adults (AOA) groups are proving that every day at the Y!
Here you will find activities that are a match for your schedule, interests and desired level of fitness – from classes to volunteering to playing pickleball, and much more! Just ask Linda and Dennis, both of whom have been AOA Volunteer Coordinators at the Waukee Family YMCA for more than five years. As Volunteer Coordinators, they are responsible for welcoming newcomers to class, planning outings and events, scheduling speakers and being involved in daily activities around the Y.
"I joined the Y and started classes after several major life changes,” Linda says. “I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, which forced me to go on disability, quit working and move. I ended up in Waukee, where I knew no one. When I made the decision to take charge of my life instead of being a patient, I began my journey at the Y. My goal was to use my muscles to stay ahead of the disease, and at the Y, I found so much more ... community, friendship and accountability."
Dennis says the AOA Group field trips (which are open to members of any age) are some of his favorite things about the Y. He also enjoys the genuinely friendly members and staff, diversity of options to customize your physical needs to your schedule, and variety of AOA classes.
Staying active and engaged – physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially – is one of the best ways to fight off the effects of aging. Ask about Active Older Adult programming at your YMCA, and we’ll connect you with better health and a whole new group of friends!
