Long time Des Moines residents, Patrick and Isis are one of the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus’s newest residents.
This inseparable duo have been together for the better part of 15 years. You may even see them out in the courtyard as Isis is leash trained and walked daily. Originally from Ohio, Patrick spent 7 years in the Marines then moved to Iowa in 1993 to work as an industrial mechanic and made Des Moines his home in 2004. Patrick enjoys fishing and collecting books, with one of his favorite authors being John Steinbeck.
He spent 14 years building his prized collection of books and lived in the same apartment in Des Moines. He was devastated when he found himself homeless and without his books from suddenly losing his apartment. With nowhere to go, Patrick reached out to the Iowa Department of Veteran’s Affairs for help and was able to obtain a voucher for rental assistance. This gave him the resources to move into the YSHC!
Patrick says that “home” means a safe place and that’s what they’ve found living at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus. He loves the location and affordability of the YSHC. Patrick and Isis aren’t planning on moving anytime soon.
