Flag football at the Y focuses on learning and fun.
Football remains America’s favorite spectator sport, according to the Gallup polling organization. However, fewer kids than ever are suiting up to play tackle football, amid growing concerns about the sport’s potential for concussion or traumatic brain injury.
Enter flag football. Although it’s been around for decades, flag football has seen a resurgence in popularity as parents and kids look for safer ways to compete in the sport they love. The New York Times cites data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association showing that flag football is the nation’s fastest-growing team sport, boasting nearly 100,000 more participants ages 6-12 than its pads-and-tackle cousin.
At the Y, we sponsor flag football leagues for boys and girls in grades 1-8, where kids can develop skills and have fun competing in a safe, positive environment. For preschoolers and kindergartners, we offer Y-Rookies instructional clinics and shorter games to introduce them to the basics of the sport. At every level, staff and volunteer coaches make sure the emphasis stays where it belongs: on encouraging teamwork and healthy competition and helping all players reach their potential.
Registration is open through August 19 for the Fall 2019 season of flag football, which begins the week of September 2. Teams practice once a week at a time and location of their choosing, with games held on Saturday mornings. Kids can request to play on teams with their friends, or sign up individually and make new friends among their teammates.
