The Y offers sports programs that help youth develop and discover their potential through relationships, teamwork and healthy competition. Youth basketball is one of our premier youth sports programs because of all the benefits it has!
1. Exercise & Endurance
Basketball is a great way for your kids to get a full-body workout and build endurance by running up and down the court during practice and games!
2. Hand-eye Coordination
Alertness is key in basketball! Players have to be coordinated enough to focus on their dribbling while also being prepared to pass the ball or shoot a basket.
Basketball is a quick moving game. The direction of play can change any second and kids have to be fast on their feet to adapt quickly and make good plays.
Between the plays, the movements on the court and everything else, kids will learn how to be strategic about the way they play. This quick thinking develops problem-solving skills that empowers them on and off the court.
5. Social Skills
Basketball is a great way to help young children develop their social skills and build relationships. Interaction with coaches and players creates plenty of opportunity for conversation about the one thing they all love – basketball!
6. Year-Round Fun
The basketball season isn’t a year-round endeavor, but kids can continue to play even after the season has ended. Our YMCA’s have basketball hoops that are available for practice all year long. If you come to the Y alone, we’re positive you’ll be able to find someone to join you, too!
