Cornell moved to Iowa in late February from Chicago. According to Cornell, “I had fun growing up in Chicago. It is a beautiful city. When I was growing up, they still had ships parked along Navy Pier and I loved to go see them”. Even though he loves Chicago, he says he likes Des Moines and likes living at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus. He is close to his sister who lives nearby and gets to see her often.
Cornell is a veteran of the United States Army. He also has his commercial driver’s license and was a truck driver for thirty years before health problems prevented him from continuing to drive. He was also a driving instructor!
Cornell has a 16-year-old son he enjoys talking to on the phone. He also likes to read, especially non-fiction, and watch documentaries. He loves to fish when he gets the chance and hopes to get a fishing pole when he is able. He also loves to walk and says his favorite activity is to walk around Grey’s Lake where it is beautiful.
“I’ve been through a lot”, Cornell says, “But I like it here, and I like the fact that everyone is cool here”.
