Maureen moved into the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus in December of 2017. Prior to the YMCA, Maureen was living at Central Iowa Shelter and Services for 5 months and even spent some time in a homeless shelter in Arizona before coming to Iowa. After spending so much time without permanent housing and stability, she was ecstatic to have her own personal space. While living at Supportive Housing, Maureen immediately started working on her goals. Once she had a safe place to stay and keep her belongings, she was able to better focus on her long term goals.
Maureen had just begun working at Hy-Vee shortly before moving in and was able to succeed in a work environment once she obtained housing. Along with finding stable employment, she was able to address some health issues.
During my first meeting with Maureen, she told me that her ultimate goal was to save up and buy a car. She also told me that she was hoping to use the Y as a stepping stone, save money and be able to move into the community in 1 year.
Maureen has such a driven, bubbly and positive personality, it was very easy to foresee her being successful with anything she put her mind to.
She maintained her steady job at Hy-Vee and with all of the resources and assistance provided by the YMCA, it allowed her to be able to save money. When we started talking about piloting our graduate program, we knew she would be a great candidate. She immediately said yes and was so excited to explore community apartment options.
Maureen moved out into Windsor Terrace apartments on the graduate program in June of 2019 and couldn’t be happier. She has said many times that it is the nicest place she has ever lived in and she has so much space!
Since moving out on the graduate program and with the YMCA’s temporary rental assistance, Maureen has been able to become financially stable. She bought her own car and started a new FT job at Stam’s, which is going great. She has officially accomplished her two main goals that were discussed in her very first case management meeting. Maureen’s constant positive energy is always a delight to be around. She embodies what it is like to be a successful graduate from the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus.
