The YMCA of Greater Des Moines is moving ahead with plans to renovate the Riverfront Y.
A review committee has recently selected Smith Metzger as the project’s architects. At a later date, renovation plans will be announced that will meet today’s members’ needs as well as establishing a better connection with the adjacent Riverwalk project. Fundraising for the project is slated to begin in the fall with work beginning the following spring.
“I don’t anticipate closing this branch during the renovation process,” said Vernon Delpesce, chief executive officer of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. “Our Riverfront members should know that they will continue to have access to the facilities throughout construction.”
Renovation to the Riverfront Y is limited to the membership portion of the branch. The old residential towers complex is not tied to the project and conversations continue with developers and others on the future use of that facility.
