You don’t have to be a star athlete to benefit from the Athlete Development Program that Tim Suchan provides at the YMCA Healthy Living Center in Clive.
In fact, Suchan says the program helps athletes of all ages and sports reach their athletic potential and reduce their risk of injury.
“If athletes really want to be competitive, they should consider this type of program,” said Suchan, who is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. “A lot of our exercises are quantifiable and it’s fun to see the athletes’ progress and see obvious improvement.”
Currently Suchan is working with athletes from 11-years-old all the way up to a 73-year-old man who wants to improve his golf game. Typically, however, Suchan works with junior high school and high school athletes in sports ranging from hockey and swimming to volleyball and basketball.
He develops sport specific training based on research and experience. The goal, Suchan says, is to establish a strong foundation and increase overall athleticism while working on skills and drills for the sport that is the current focus.
“We work on upper and lower body, core, power, agility as well as overall athleticism,” he said. “While we utilize similar exercises for everyone, there will be exercises that are specific for their sport. For instance, with swimmers we’ll simulate a swimming stroke. With golfers, we’ll do exercises that will simulate their golf swing.”
The Athlete Development Program at the YMCA Healthy Living Center also offers specific courses designed to help athletes return to their sport after an injury, golf strength and conditioning to increase shot distance and consistency of play, and water-based sports conditioning that allows for an anaerobic training environment without absorbing abuse to joints and muscles.
