YMCA OF GREATER DES MOINES PARTNERS WITH WALMART FOUNDATION TO FIGHT CHILD HUNGER
Des Moines, Iowa – The YMCA of Greater Des Moines has received a $15,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to address child hunger with a focus on increasing participation in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).
The SFSP provides a free lunch to children ages 18 and under, Monday through Friday at the John R. Grubb Community YMCA at 1611 11th Street in Des Moines, and the South Suburban YMCA at 401 East Army Post Road, also in Des Moines, until classes resume in August. The YMCA of Greater Des Moines program is run in conjunction with the Des Moines Public Schools.
The lunch hour at both the Grubb Y and the South Suburban Y are set at 90 minutes to provide children the opportunity to “Stay and Play.” Following lunch, children and their families are encouraged to enjoy the Y’s facilities including playground, gym and pool.
The SFSP program not only will help hundreds of children in the Des Moines area stay well-nourished, active and energized all summer long, but it also will alleviate the strain on family food budgets when school is out. As a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y is focused on ensuring that all children have access to food and maintain good health.
Nationally, the Y is a partner in the Walmart Foundation’s 2012 Summer Giving Campaign, which has committed more than $20 million in grants to expand nutrition, learning and employment programs for elementary, middle and high school students in more than 350 communities. The Walmart Foundation contributed a $5 million grant to YMCA of the USA to address child hunger. Y-USA, in turn, has passed the funding along in the form of grants to participating YMCAs, including the $15,000 grant to the YMCA of Greater Des Moines.
