365 Teams Up with Back 2 School Bash to Celebrate Launch
Des Moines, Iowa — 365 and Back 2 School Bash will team up Sunday, Aug. 26 to make a difference and celebrate the recent 365 launch.
To kick off each school year, Back 2 School Bash (B2SB) provides school supplies for over 600 students. Since its first year in 2005, B2SB has relied mostly on the help of friends and family for volunteers, says B2SB co-founder Shekinah Young.
“Volunteers play an essential role in making B2SB a great success every year,” Shekinah says. “We recruit friends to help out most years, and they set up, run and clean up for the whole event—it makes for a long day!”
This year, 365 aims to provide 40 volunteers for the event, breaking up the duties into three shorter shifts—noon-2:30 p.m., 2:30-4:30 p.m., and 4:30-6 p.m. Volunteers can sign up for any shift at www.join365.org.
The event, hosted by the John R. Grubb Community YMCA, will also serve as the launch volunteer event for 365—the Y’s new volunteer initiative that aims to make it easy for people to make a little difference, every day.
Vernon Delpesce, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, says B2SB was a perfect fit for the 365 launch.
“Our goal with 365 is to get involved in efforts that have an impact beyond the walls of the YMCA,” Delpesce said. “Back 2 School Bash is a great example of a broad community effort that can make a large impact. It’s a perfect fit—and we believe that people will volunteer if we connect them with causes and make it a little easier for them.”
This summer, 365 fully launched its website, designed to connect community and Y members with causes in the Greater Des Moines-area. Users join the site, set their interests (i.e. working with kids, giving back or work projects) and will receive an email automatically as soon as a new event matches their interests.
“We appreciate all the help we can get from 365,” Shekinah says. “Back 2 School Bash is ecstatic about the community’s response to help this year’s event.”
365’s goal in the next six months is to reach 1,000 volunteer members. As of the start of August, 365 is 225 members strong.
“We’ve been very pleased with the response of the Greater Des Moines community so far,” Delpesce said. “Purposefully starting slowly, we’ve been able to ensure the systems work properly for event coordinators and volunteers alike. 365 is ready to expand and we’re very confident that it’ll continue to grow.”
