Stories like LaVerne Jones's—stories of inspiration, strength and community—are what make the LIVESTRONG Program at the YMCA so unique. The YMCA of Greater Des Moines Pieathlon on Saturday, May 11 will support cancer survivors and their families through the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program. “We lost a daughter, Kathleen, to ovarian cancer 16 years ago. No one can tell you what it is like to lose a child. We took Kathleen from Spirit Lake to Iowa City, back and forth, for two years for her chemo treatments. My husband and I were her caregivers for the last seven weeks before she died. Harry, my husband, had two sisters that came everyday to help out and just to be there to support us. My family helped all they could including sending her money for medical bills each month. We couldn’t have gone through it all without the support of others. Harry and I were married 59 years when he died from cancer just two years ago. When your spouse dies, part of you goes too. Our families, friends and our YMCA friends helped us during his illness in every way possible—rides, meals, visits and prayers. We were members of the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program and what I learned about being a cancer survivor is that you can’t do it alone….it takes a community”.
