In a continued effort to nurture the potential of every child, improve family health and well-being, and provide opportunities for families to give back and support their communities, the John R. Grubb Community YMCA will host a Fathers and Friends Cookout Saturday, June 15.
The event will be held at Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines from 3-6 p.m. that day.
Men will gather to share their favorite dish with family, friends and community. Fathers, uncles and brothers will cook, bake and/or grill their signature dish to share with event attendees in a sample serving. Family activities will include music, games, story telling, face painting and bounce houses in a festive atmosphere designed for the entire family.
“Children today are preoccupied with messages from social media, and other technology driven sources and would benefit greatly from active-based, face-to-face communication with an engaged and present Dad,” said Cameron Nicholson, executive director at the John R. Grubb YMCA. “Providing the space where families can see their Fathers serving and leading while promoting healthy living can reap large benefits for all.”
Given the strengths inherent in men being engaged in child rearing and in the lives of children, one way to improve child well-being is to increase the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible, and committed fathers and adult male role models.
The benefits of healthy, nurturing relationships between men and children, especially fathers and primary caregivers, are well known. Studies show that children who have close relationships with engaged fathers and other adult male role models display:
better cognitive outcomes, even as infants
higher self-esteem and less depression as teenagers
higher grades, test scores, and overall academic achievement
lower levels of drug and alcohol use.
The event is sponsored by Polk County Board of Supervisors, The Greater Men Foundation, MidAmerican Energy, Holmes Murphy & Associates, Meredith Corporation and Dahl’s Food.
