(July 19, 2013) – Today, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines announced additional details on the new Wellmark YMCA in downtown Des Moines at the former Polk County Convention Complex (Plex).
To date, the YMCA has raised 90% of the $30 million project through private fundraising, bonds and new market tax credits.
In addition to financial donations, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield charitably donated the parcel of land it owns directly next to and west of the Plex to the YMCA. The additional land will be used by the YMCA to expand its new facility to accommodate a new 50-meter swimming pool with seating and amenities to host major aquatic events.
The Plex will be remodeled with the new facility’s features including a gym, indoor track, racquetball and handball courts, indoor cycling studio and wellness center.
“This is a historic event in the history of the YMCA in Des Moines,” said Vernon Delpesce, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. “We’re excited to partner with Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield to continue to improve the health of our community. We’re pleased with the tremendous support we have received in order to maintain a permanent Y presence in downtown Des Moines.”
Construction is slated to begin later this year at the Wellmark YMCA.
