Two individuals with strong ties to the YMCA of Greater Des Moines have been named this year’s recipients of the Tom Hamilton Annual Campaign Spirit Award.
Donors and volunteers Don Jordahl, Riverfront YMCA, and Mark Patterson, Walnut Creek Family YMCA, were the award recipients.
For 40 years Don Jordahl has been a member of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines and has served as a volunteer for a number of those years. A current member of the Riverfront YMCA Board of Managers, Jordahl chaired the branch’s Annual Campaign the past two years after serving as a campaigner for the Riverfront Y for many years.
Mark Patterson has served as a volunteer campaigner for the YMCA for over 30 years. During that time span, Patterson ”tells the Y story” to everyone he runs across, asking people if they know about the Y and its campaign before sharing what the Y does for the Des Moines community. An almost-daily visitor to the Y, he is also known for seeking donations even while he is working out.
The Tom Hamilton Annual Campaign Spirit Award is named for Tom Hamilton, a key leader, volunteer, donor, member and advocate of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines who died in 2011. For decades, Hamilton advocated the virtues of the Y throughout Des Moines, while raising funds that helped underprivileged children and families become part of the Y.
“Tom’s commitment to the Y never waivered and his enthusiasm and passion for the Y was evident to anyone who came in contact with him,” said Vernon Delpesce, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines.
The Hamilton Spirit Award is given annually bestowed on a Y volunteer who has “a passion to tell the Y story, a drive to motivate other campaign volunteers, a desire to renew all previous donor pledges, the energy to find new donors to grow the fundraising campaign, and a commitment that never waivers.”
