Construction has been underway on the new downtown YMCA going into the old Polk County Plex location.
It's located at 5th Street and Grand Avenue.
The new YMCA is scheduled to open January 1.
Right now, crews are working on structural parts of the inside of the YMCA and outside they are adding the walls where eventually an Olympic-sized pool will be.
The 50-meter pool will be one of the biggest features of the new building with a cafe that will overlook it.
There will also be the usual gym equipment plus dozens of classes including spinning and yoga.
YMCA officials said this new pool will be allow them to host local and national competitions, making this new building unlike anything before.
"To have an indoor, 50-meter pool and especially to be able to do that in the heart of downtown for doing aquatic events and for population here will be just a tremendous asset for this community," said Vernon Delpesce, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines.
Total cost for the project is estimated at $38 million. The YMCA is scheduled to open in January, but the pool won't open until summer.
