The YMCA of Greater Des Moines announced today that former Iowa Governor, Chet Culver, has been hired as its President. Culver currently serves as CEO & President of the Culver Group, an energy consultancy in Des Moines.
"Governor Culver will be an important part of our leadership team of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines," YMCA CEO Dave Schwartz, said. "After more than 25 years of experience in both the public and private sector, obviously Chet has worked hard to establish valuable relationships throughout the community and, for that matter, the entire state of Iowa. He also has a tremendous personal commitment and passion for the YMCA mission and its values. So I have no doubt he will be extremely effective in helping to spread our message and engage more people in Y-related programs and activities throughout our broader community."
Culver served as the state of Iowa's 40th governor and was previously Iowa's Secretary of State. After leaving office in 2011, he founded the Chet Culver Group. With his substantial experience and background in renewable energy, transmission and infrastructure, the Culver Group has provided project development assistance and strategic planning services to public and private sector entities nationwide.

Most importantly, I look forward to getting out across central Iowa to share the YMCA story, do what I can to make a difference and help improve the quality of life for countless Iowans."
Culver, was a high school teacher and coach in the Des Moines Public Schools. Culver served as a volunteer YMCA basketball coach prior to his tenure in elective office and attended YMCA summer camp as a youth near his parents’ hometown of Cedar Rapids.
Chet Culver graduated from Virginia Tech and earned a Master’s degree from Drake University. Culver, 50, and his wife Mariclare, have two children, Clare and John. They reside in West Des Moines and belong to the Sacred Heart Parish.
