Tran was directing traffic when the impact from the 3-ton pickup threw him 47 feet. His lung was punctured, ribs were broken and he suffered serious head injuries. Tran's heart stopped beating for 12 minutes during surgery.
The veteran police officer spent a month at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and another four months in rehabilitation facilities before returning home. He had to relearn how to talk, walk, write and perform daily tasks.
Now retired, the 57-year-old continues to train his muscles during therapy sessions three times a week at the YMCA Healthy Living Center in Clive. He's gained enough strength and stamina to travel the country with his wife.
