DES MOINES - The YMCA of Greater Des Moines has now hit a milestone: 150 years in business.
On Sunday, they invited the community inside for an appropriately-themed fitness birthday party. The event was free and open to the entire public.
There were plenty of games and activities for the kids and mini-classes and demonstrations for the adults.
"The goal is to let people get to know today's 'Y.' It's not your father's 'Y' not your grandfather's 'Y'. Sure, we have fitness and pools, but we have so much more than that," said Ruth Comer, the head of marketing for the YMCA.
The YMCA partnered up with Hy-Vee pharmacists and dietitians to big out flu shots and biometric screenings. There were plenty of give-a-ways -- including a family vacation trip. And if you were hungry, Fareway gave out free hot dogs to guests too.
