Free events take place February 23-24 at six metro YMCA branches and the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus
Des Moines, Iowa – If you’re sick and tired of winter – and by now, who isn’t? – the YMCA of Greater Des Moines has a remedy for you.
The YMCA is sponsoring its first-ever Cabin Fever Weekend this coming Saturday and Sunday, February 23-24, at six branch locations in the metro area and at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus in Des Moines. All events and activities are free and open to the public.
Ruth Comer, vice president of marketing and communications for the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, said the Cabin Fever Weekend celebration provides families with fun, healthy alternatives to staying cooped up inside on cold, snowy days.
“We are opening our facilities to the community and inviting everyone inside for games, sports, swimming, exercise and other activities they can enjoy with family and friends,” Comer said. “Unfortunately, we can’t do anything about the weather, but maybe we can make these last weeks of winter a little more bearable by celebrating all the fun you can have indoors at the Y.”
Cabin Fever Weekend activities are taking place at Walnut Creek Family YMCA, Waukee Family YMCA, South Suburban YMCA, John R. Grubb YMCA, Wellmark YMCA and Indianola YMCA. Planned activities include a Disney-themed pool party, a kids’ carnival, family pickleball and dodgeball, fitness classes, movies, inflatables, treats and more.
In addition, the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus – which provides permanent housing and services for those who were homeless or at risk of homelessness – is offering families the chance to complete one of several volunteer projects on behalf of residents.
Comer emphasized that you don’t have to be a member of the YMCA to take part in Cabin Fever Weekend. Members will be asked to scan in; non-members will be asked to sign in and wear a wristband so YMCA staff can guide them to the various activities.
