YMCA OF GREATER DES MOINES receives $10,000 Bayer Fund grant
for Summer Learning Loss Prevention Programs STEM initiative
at the John R. Grubb YMCA
Des Moines, IA (June 10) – Employees from the Bayer-Monsanto facility in Boone, IA recommended the YMCA of Greater Des Moines to receive a $10,000 grant from the Bayer Fund.
This partnership with Bayer-Monsanto will enable the Y to integrate consistent STEM instruction into its Summer Learning Loss Prevention literacy program, giving children the opportunity to develop STEM skills and grow an appreciation for STEM careers. The YMCA Summer Learning Loss Program increases the literacy skills of elementary-age children from lower-income families who are performing below grade level.
Executive Director of the John R. Grubb YMCA, Charles Mercer, said he was excited to learn of this continued funding from Bayer-Monsanto for the children who attend summer learning loss programs at his Y. “To be able to continue to expose our young learners to STEM activities will help them grow in their understanding of all they can be when they grow up,” Mercer said. “Let’s continue to move this next generation of learners into their tomorrows with all the tools they need to develop their talents and find their purpose.”
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines received a Bayer Fund grant last year for $15,000, also earmarked for the Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program/STEM. YMCA Program Director Jake Leonard commented, “The 2018 funding supported new STEM ideas we’ve had as a team, so we were able to plan and implement those activities to an eager group of learners in the YMCA’s Starfish and Power Scholars summer programs.”
“Our mission is to positively impact our local communities,” said Scott Chitty, Site Leader at Bayer Boone Production Site. “We have supported the YMCA several times over the years and are pleased to do so again with this Bayer Fund grant for STEM skill development for elementary age children that the YMCA serves.”
In 2019, Bayer Fund awarded more than $1.4 million through this program to nonprofit organizations in rural communities to help address essential needs in Food & Nutrition, STEM Education, and Community Development. Nonprofit organizations across the U.S. have received more than $7 million through this program over the last five years.
