Dear Ankeny Y Members,
The past six weeks have been the most difficult in the history of the Ankeny Family YMCA – but today, we’re pleased to announce some good news. Effective Thursday, August 23, the Ankeny Y will be back in business!
Over the past month-and-a-half, the staff and boards of the Ankeny YMCA and the YMCA of Greater Des Moines have been searching for ways to continue providing services to the community following the devastating flash flooding that damaged the Y facility and forced it to close. This week, the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines approved a plan for resuming operations in the current Y facility at 1102 North Ankeny Boulevard.
A task force appointed by the Board will work with the school district and the community on necessary repairs to the Y facility, but in the meantime, the Ankeny Y will resume normal hours of operation in the building: Monday-Thursday, 4:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday, 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
We want to caution members that there is still a great deal of reconstruction work to be done in the building. Until this reconstruction work is completed, some areas of the building will be closed, and some programs will need to operate on a limited basis. Our plan is to have the weight room, cycling studio, pool and some cardio equipment available when we open on August 23. We are in the process of developing modified schedules for group exercise, swim instruction and Learn & Play; those schedules will be published on the website, mobile app and Facebook page this Tuesday, August 21.
To celebrate the reopening of our facility, and to show our appreciation for your patience and support, we are planning our first pre-game party of the season on Friday, August 24. From 5-7 p.m., prior to the big Hawks-Jaguars matchup, we will be offering free hotdogs and inflatables for the kids. Please stop by and allow us to thank you in person for your encouragement during this trying time for all of us.
There is a long road ahead of us, but it feels great to be back on track with a plan to continue serving the needs of our members and the Ankeny community. As we shared with you in our last update, the Ankeny Family YMCA is, and always has been, more than a building. You have demonstrated that fact over the past six weeks through your loyalty to the Y and our cause. Special thanks also must go to the Ankeny Y staff and members of the Y’s Board of Managers, who have devoted many, many hours to finding a way forward for our organization. Even when the situation looked bleak, they never lost faith in each other or in the mission of the Y.
Watch for those class schedules to be published on Tuesday. For now, I couldn’t be more proud and excited to say – see you next week at the Y!
When you join the Y, you belong to a community of men, women and children who strive every day to be healthy, confident, connected and secure. When you give to the Y, you continue to strengthen our community and move us all forward by providing financial assistance for people who need us the most. When you volunteer at the Y, you take an active role in making a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own community.
