The Ankeny Family YMCA was one of many buildings in our community affected by the devastating storms and flooding of June 30-July 1. Professional restoration crews have now completed mitigation of the damage caused by 2-4 inches of water that covered most of the main floor of the building. Flooring has been removed, the ruined portion of drywall has been cut away, and the building is airing out and drying. YMCA staff and volunteers have salvaged furniture, equipment and supplies from the building and moved those items into storage.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we worked over the last 10 days to clean up and assess the damage to our facility. YMCA officials are collaborating with the school district, insurance companies and our equipment suppliers to formulate a recovery plan for the Y facility. As of today, the Ankeny Y remains closed, and a reopening date has not been determined. We will continue to provide you with regular updates on our progress toward reopening.
In the meantime, we want you to know that the Y is still serving members in Ankeny to best of our ability, and we plan to maintain a presence here for a very long time to come! The YMCA of Greater Des Moines and the staff and advisory board of the Ankeny Family YMCA remain 100 percent committed to this community and to the members who call this branch home.
YMCA leaders have been meeting daily to make temporary arrangements for delivering programs and services to members. Here is what we have accomplished to date:
Day Camp is based at Lutheran Church of Hope in Ankeny, serving approximately 60 campers each week. We are grateful to the church community for sharing their facilities with us. The campers are swimming at the Wellmark YMCA downtown.
Our Ankeny swim team is meeting and practicing at the MidAmerican Energy Aquatic Center at the Wellmark YMCA, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
As always, Ankeny YMCA members have full access to any of the other seven branches of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. However, we realize that driving to another branch to work out may not be convenient for some of you. We are investigating the possibility of alternate locations in the community for swim lessons, group fitness classes, cardio equipment and weights, and should have more information on that very soon.
Our full-time staff will continue serving Ankeny Y members, and other Y branches are offering hours for our part-time employees.
Our Ankeny members have been patient, generous and supportive as we have worked through the challenges of the last two weeks. Many of you have volunteered, sent food, donated supplies and offered words of encouragement to those cleaning up from the flood waters. Now we are entering the next phase of our disaster response – the recovery phase - and we hope we can continue to count on you. Here are some things you can do to help:
Maintain your membership at the Y. We are continuing to offer programs and services here in Ankeny, as well as a full range of services available at seven other branches in the metro area. Your membership support is vital to our recovery efforts.
Donate to our flood recovery effort. The YMCA is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, and your donations are tax-deductible. If you would like to contribute directly to the Ankeny Y flood recovery effort, you will find a link on our website to a convenient online giving page.
While the Ankeny Y facility is closed, you may direct questions to Ankeny@dmymca.org or call (515)471-8506 during regular business hours. Please leave a message and we will get back to you ASAP.
We may have been knocked down, but we aren’t staying down. Working together, we will emerge from this crisis better than ever, with a renewed dedication to our cause of strengthening the foundations of community.
When you join the Y, you belong to a community of men, women and children who strive every day to be healthy, confident, connected and secure. When you give to the Y, you continue to strengthen our community and move us all forward by providing financial assistance for people who need us the most. When you volunteer at the Y, you take an active role in making a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own community.
